Welcome to Košice

Regularly scheduled flights come to international Kosice airport (from Prague, Vienna and sometimes from Brno and Moscow) and Bratislava (from many cities, including Zurich, Prague, Moscow, Tel Aviv and Persian Gulfstates). Other destinations are added from time to time, but these are fairly stable. Charter flights reach many more regional airports. (Served by Czech Airlines, Slovak Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Midland, and more). Airport International Košice is about 5km far from accomodation in Košice and can be reached by bus.

Many of Europe’s busiest train routes pass through or very near Slovakia. It is very simple to reach Slovakia from neighbouring countries. There are also regular trains directly to and from some cities in Germany, Italy and Hungary. Generally, the train fares are very low. The train network in Slovakia is well developed, and trains are the most comfortable way to travel. Check out the web site of Slovak Railways for a train schedule available in english version. If you bring an ISIC (International student identification card) with a chip, you will have free trains. Otherwise, if your internship is with university, they can provide you with documents needed to obtain free trains.

Most countries in Europe are connected with Slovak destinations by regular service, usually direct (Eurolines provides service from 21 European towns).

Slovakia is now in the process of connecting its key cities by highways, but this project will not be complete for few more years. However, smaller roads are generally in good condition. Roads are marked as in Western Europe. You don’t have to pay any taxes or fees (only at highways you need to buy highway ticket). Hitch-hiking is common, and legal except major highways.

Regular bus transport starts around 5 am and finishes around 11:00 pm. There are night buses on all major routes. Bus ticket costs approximately 50 cent.

The largest church of Slovakia with a capacity of over 5,000 people and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe is a heart and center of Kosice. Its history is fascinating in from spiritual, civil and artistic perspective and also from the perspective of legends. It is said that there is one particular stone in the cathedral –should it be removed, the whole cathedral collapses. Only medieval masters know where this stone is set-in and thus supposedly insuring themselves to be paid. On each floor the two staircases converge, and many call them staircase of love, even if the official name is the royal staircase. Outside of church rainwater gargoyles are sticking out. It is definitely a must-see of Košice, located on the main square.

Located on the main square of Košice The area around the fountain is occupied by a square with benches. It is a popular place to rest. The rectangular niche of the fountain is filled
with water jets. The fountain operates all the time during the summer, but every hour, to the rhythm of the music, a performance of several minutes begins. After dark it is enriched with colorful backlight. Additional experience is provided by the carillon playing next to the wind. Unfortunately, it’s under reconstruction this year.

Tower is located on the top of the hill with the same name and offers a beautiful view of the city of Košice, Košice Basin, Hornád Valley and the surrounding mountains. Thanks to the proximity to the city center, it is easily accessible. You can access it by a footpath for pedestrians from the parking lot of the state road Košice – Kavečany. It is an easy, unpretentious walk, about 20 minutes long. The lookout tower is 21.51 meters high and has a steel construction that is complemented by wood. The tower has three lookout terraces at a height of 10.88 m, 13.6 m and 16.32 m. There are also embossed maps with marked highest peaks in the surroundings and binoculars.

The underground legend that has been rumored and whispered about for ages. Head toward the Collosseum Club to a loud concert, wild party, or just a cold pint with friends. Not only can you enjoy the music of diverse genres, several bars of the club are an ideal spot to create some friendly connections within the subculture. Visit debates, discussions, movie screenings, drama performances, and even travel lectures. Look for an unobtrusive door on Dominican Square, which opens gates to the alternative world in a red & black disguise.

The New Chicago facility in Košice opened a year ago and is their newest facility. It is located in the center of Košice, not far from Jakab’s palace, at Mlynská 27. The space is divided into several parts and each has its colorful design. For example, a cafe section for comfortable sitting with coffee, a beer hall for fans of draft beer, or a shisha section with a shisha bar and quality hookahs. In the company, they regularly organize various events and show LIVE sports broadcasts. During your visit, you can play various board and board games. In addition, the bar has a game zone with games such as darts, football, billiards, basketball, pinball, air hockey, and others. Thanks to slot machines, consoles, and games, nobody gets bored here.

As we have suggested at the beginning of this chapter, having fun and proper nightlife in Košice can have numerous forms. Neverending ones. Visit a classic disco close to the Aupark Shopping Center and swirl to the music of local DJs who know how to please your pop heart. In Boba Bar, your entrance fee covers drink consumption, so no worries, you’ll exchange it for some delicious cocktails pretty soon after you get here!
